Morehead City’s mayoral race was decided by one vote.  The loser of the race responded by stomping his feet and yelling “Na Uh” to everyone’s surprise, the temper tantrum actually worked!!! This is possible because the mayor’s tirade triggered a little-known state law that was written in the late 1800s in an effort to cut down on duel-related deaths. SB 6969 requires that the mayoral candidates compete in a best-of-three challenge known as the TriCup to determine the rightful winner of the election.

The first competition requires the candidates to listen to their constituents for a full 20 minutes. The first candidate to pull their hair out loses. If either candidate is bald, the two must accurately repeat the key points presented by the speakers. The last time an official was forced to actually listen to voters was 1824, when Governor J. Okke decided it was no longer in his best interest to help the people.

The second competition is mudslinging. The county shall make available one Mud Bog so the candidates can throw mud at each other until one gives up or can no longer throw mud.

If the candidates are tied at the end of the two challenges, a pig pick’n competition will settle the tie. The candidates must cook a traditional whole hog at a neutral site, where they will be judged on the BBQ and the sides.

Newport and Swansboro have already agreed to host the events if needed.

This story is still developing.
